Welcome to The A3 Review's May Contest
The prompt for this month's Contest is: Four. Four eyes, four-letter words, The Four Seasons - the band, the concertos, or the seasons themselves, as in Henry Carlile's poem. Write a praise poem to your favourite four-legged friend or a story about being four sheets to the wind. What was it like to be four years old? Or to watch your four-year old child, or four-month old baby. Be inspired by Carrie Fountain's "Four Months Old."
Our word limit is 150. See if you can fit 4 stories into a single submission. Four haikus might be easier. Tell the story of a life in four anecdotes, as in Mary Ruefle's "Four Anecdotes from the Life of Dang Yo-une." There's something very neat about four. A square. Four seasons, four corners, four walls. Double-dating. Is four always a comfortable number? Is it always as lucky as a four-leaf clover?
You could write or draw a piece based on the four humours. Or your night at the Four Seasons Hotel. Or what it's like to be one of four siblings. You could use the number four to divide your story into four chapters, or create a collage out of four images.
You could use this quote by James Thurber as a starting point: “Two is company, four is a party, three is a crowd. One is a wanderer.”
We welcome short stories, flash fiction, poetry, comics, graphic stories, a snippet of memoir, photographs, illustrations, and any combination of the above. The only restriction is a word-limit of 150 and images should fit well into an A6 panel.
